The Perfect Grilled Cheese Sandwich
Last Updated on March 4, 2026 by Janell

As we were driving home form church this afternoon, my husband asked what we had for lunch. I would love to go out for lunch but I am always disappointed with the food when we eat out. So I would rather save the money and eat at home. I knew we were going to have Chicken Tinga Tostadas for dinner so I said we would eat grilled cheese for lunch.
I remembered reading that diners use mayonnaise instead of butter when grilling their grilled cheese sandwiches. I only have sticks of butter and I hate trying to spread it on the bread when I am making grilled cheese. So, I was happy to try mayo instead of butter. Just spray your pan with a little Pam so it doesn't stick.
Everyone was very happy with their grilled cheese sandwiches. My 2 year old that never finishes a sandwich ate 2 grilled cheese sandwiches! My husband and son also had 2 sandwiches. So either they were very hungry - or they really liked the new ingredient!
I used light mayonnaise, so I don't think it's any worse for you than butter. Maybe it's even a little healthier. I was too busy in the kitchen making sandwiches that I ate too many chips and guacamole, so I didn't have a sandwich.
So what do you think? Will you try mayo instead of butter on your next grilled cheese sandwich? I may try it on a panini next time!

I always use mayo for our GC sammies...it's AMAZING! My husband likes a slice of ham on his too. So many variations of cheese to use and it all tastes SO GOOD using mayo instead of butter!
i made them like that the last time, ince i was in a hurry and the mayo was already on the counter. everyone loved them 🙂
The saturated fat in regular mayo is less than butter. You don't have to spray the pan first, it won't stick.
Thanks for the comment!
I never knew that you could grill sandwiches using may. I'm definitely going to try this and I'm sure my crew will eat more than one as well. Thanks for sharing!
I've never tried Mayo but I have used Miracle Whip. Also, Italian dressing is amazing! Just pour some into a bowl then make the sandwich and dip both sides in it! We have grilled cheeses very often! My toddler loves them and I must admit I never grew out of them myself!
Very good idea! Thanks for sharing!
This sounds yummy! I will have to try this next time but not tell my husband - he can't stand the thought of hot mayo!
I hope you enjoy it. You can't tell at all that it is mayo!
