This weekend there were some pretty big football games on TV. My husband loves to watch them, and we invite people over to hang out and cheer for their favorite teams. We like to have a house full of adults and kids having a good time. I enjoy being the house where everyone can just come over, relax, and have a great time. And I also love to serve some delicious and easy snacks!

Just about every time I go to Walmart, I have Orville Redenbacher® 6-pack Movie Theater Butter Popcorn on my shopping list. We enjoy it as a snack, watching movies, and sometimes we pop a bag and bring it to the ball field with us while we watch our kids’ sporting events. Popcorn and popcorn recipes are simple to prepare and enjoy.

I have the most delicious recipe for caramel popcorn, and it’s so easy. So I thought for the big game, I would make a sweet and salty version of my caramel popcorn. Usually, at football parties you have salty snacks like popcorn, pretzels, and chips and sweet things like brownies, cakes, and cookies. So why not enjoy all of those flavors in one handful?!

Caramel Pretzel Popcorn

(Printable Recipe)

  • 1 cup sugar
  • ½ cup butter (1 stick)
  • ½ cup light corn syrup
  • ½ Tablespoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • 3 bags of Orville Redenbacher Movie Theater Butter Popcorn regular-size bags
  • 1 cup potato chips
  • 2 cups pretzels
  • 1 cup chocolate  chips (milk or semi-sweet)

Instructions:

Preheat your oven to 250*. Grease a large cookie sheet and a 9×13 pan or 2 9×13 pans and set aside.

Place a bag of popcorn into your microwave until most of the kernels are popped.  Repeat until all 3 bags of popcorn are popped. Add the popcorn to your baking pans. Make sure you remove any unpeopled kernels.)

Stir together the sugar, butter, corn syrup, salt, and vanilla extract in a saucepan; bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring constantly.  Remove mixture from heat and stir in baking soda.

Pour sugar mixture evenly over popcorn; stir well with a lightly greased spatula.

Bake at 250 for 1 hour stirring every 15 minutes.

Spread on wax paper to cool, breaking apart large clumps as the mixture cools.

Break the potato chips and pretzels into smaller pieces (not crumbs) and sprinkle on top of the popcorn mixture.

In a microwave safe bowl, melt the chocolate chips. Heat for 1 minute at 50% power and stir. Heat the mixture for 30 seconds at 50% power and repeat until the chocolate is melted. Tip – put a small plastic baggie in a small cup with a corner down. Add the melted chocolate to the baggie. Snip off the tip and spread over the popcorn mixture.

Drizzle the chocolate over the popcorn mixture. Let it harden for about 30 minutes before serving.

This sounds really good. Bought the popcorn tonight. When I was reading over the recipe I noticed it didn't say how long to cook the carmel. Do you just bring it to a boil or cook for some time after it comes to a boil?

Yes just bring it to a boil and when you put it in the oven it turns it into the caramel that bakes onto the popcorn.

If it lasts a week.... I'm pretty sure that would not be around for more than a week at our house! Yum!
