Being A Kid 50 Years Ago

Sharing is caring!

This is a sponsored post. All opinions are my own.

My kids do not spend enough time enjoying nature and running around playing with their friends. My oldest son plays games on his Xbox with one of his good friends. They play through the internet, and they talk to each other through their headsets. His friend lives across the street from us!

Gone are the days when kids spend hours playing with their friends. I remember playing outside or even going to my friend’s house for hours! Now it seems like all kids want to do is be connected to an electronic device. We live in a pretty amazing neighborhood with tons of kids.

I know I had a great childhood – but sometimes I think about what it would have been like to have been a kid over 50 years ago. McCarthy & Stone recently did a poll asking senior adults questions about their childhood vs. now that they wanted me to share with you. The poll wanted to know what was the very best things about being a kid 50 years ago.

  • 71% said they loved being able to play outside until dark.
  • 54% said they loved knowing their neighbors.
  • 53% enjoyed that sweets cost just a penny
  • 44% liked to climb trees
  • 41% liked to listen to music on record players.

Things have changed a lot over the past 50 years. Both parents usually work, kids have after school activities, electronic devices have become a part of our daily lives. But I think it’s important that we take some time and teach out kids how to unplug and have fun!

The weather should be warming up soon, make plans to spend some time outside hanging out with your neighbors. Maybe even set up a candy stand in your driveway and sell penny sweets.
