Wedding can be expensive. I have been married for 15 years now and my wedding felt expensive. I’m glad we only have 1 daughter – my poor dad had 4 girls! You need to decide what areas you want to spend a lot of money and which areas you can spend less money. Here’s 5 tips that can help you save money when planning your wedding.

Decide on the venue – There are many different types of venues. This can be the most expensive part of your wedding. So make sure you research your options. Wedding halls or country clubs can be more expensive than a community center. You may even be able to have your reception at the church. You should also check out hotel meeting areas, the beach, or even a restaurant. It will all depend on the size of your guest list. Don’t feel like you need to invite everyone you know. Also consider the costs of catering, tables, chairs, and decorations based on the location of your reception.

Find a good seamstress that doesn’t work at the Bridal Shop – I was very lucky, my mom is a seamstress. She is so good she made my dress and all my bridesmaids dresses. She has worked for bridal shops and dry cleaners and she has done many alterations. I know her prices are a lot cheaper than having a bridal shop seamstress alter your dress. She is highly experienced and she is probably a little more flexible when it comes to your fitting schedule. Just because the seamstress doesn’t work at a Bridal shop, you are not getting less quality seamstress. Ask around – this could save you and your wedding party hundreds of dollars!

Make your own favors – If you are a member of Pinterest, you can create anything! You can easily find a project online to make as a party favor. I doubt that I still have any party favor I have ever received from a wedding I have attended. It’s a nice jester – but don’t spend a small fortune on favors. A nice little bag of candy or cookies makes everyone happy!

Simplify the flowers – Again – if you have a Pinterest account, you can find many beautiful, simple arrangements that you can make with your bridal party. I think a simple bouquet is much prettier than an elaborate amount of flowers. You want people to notice you and your dress. Don’t hide it with a large bouquet. Make sure you also pick flowers that are in-season to save money.

Pick the right time of year – You can save up to 30% if you plan your wedding during off-peak months. Plan your wedding in November or in  January, February, or March (excluding Valentines Day). There is less competition during these dates, so the prices are better. Save even more money if you don’t have your wedding on a Saturday.

These are just a few things to think about when planning your wedding. There are probably many more ways – so please leave a comment if you have a great tip!
