About this time last year our family decided it was time to adopt a dog. After many years of living outside the US, we had planted roots in a small town just outside of Louisville, Kentucky. We just moved into a new house with a big yard. My kids were old enough to understand the responsibilities that come with owning a pet.

There are so many places to adopt dogs from – you have breaders, pet shops, humane society, ASPCA, etc. But one place really stuck out to us when we were ready to adopt a dog – it was a rescue that took in animals that were in kill shelters, from the streets, etc. They got them healthy, gave them all their shots and then put them through a program called Paws Behind Bars.

Paws Behind Bars is so unique because they put the dog through obedience training for several weeks and the training is done by inmates. Once they are released from the program the lady that is in charge of all the dogs shares that they are adoptable. You submit an application in hopes of adopting that adorable dog you saw on Facebook.

We found a dog, submitted our application, but the owner said she didn’t think that dog was a good fit. Because she spends many hours with these dogs, she knows their personalities and that is very helpful. So we told her that we would trust her judgement to find us the perfect dog.

Well…a few weeks later she did find us the perfect dog. She really had no solid details about him – she said he was between 1-2 years old and it was impossible to tell what breed he was. We decided he was mostly a boxer collie mix and he loved to chase his ball. Colby was the perfect fit for our family. He loved our kids and was gentle with little kids that visited our house. While I worked at the table, he would sleep on the floor next to me. We couldn’t believe this rescue dog was such a perfect fit for our family!
