Sharing is caring!

If you are like me, you don’t fly enough to quickly accumulate frequent flyer miles. I love having frequent flyer miles but I am not usually loyal to the same airlines. I usually fly the airlines with the best prices and perks. With United Airlines – if you don’t accumulate more miles every 18 months, you lose them!

I have the most miles with United Airlines – so I know this tip works for United. I am not sure if it works for the other airlines. You can earn airline miles when you shop through the United.com “earn miles” portal on their website under the MilagePlus tab on their website.

My son had over 12,000 miles in his account that were going to expire on January 31. That is enough miles for a 1 way ticket! That’s could save us a ton of money and I don’t want those miles to just disappear!

You can earn miles for shopping online! Once they are credited to your account it will extend the life of your miles for another 18 months! You can also earn miles buy renting a car or reserving a hotel room through the United.com website. It is super easy. If I had let those miles expire, it would have been like throwing away a couple hundred dollars! You can get a 1 way ticket for as low as 12,500 miles.

As you can see, he now has his miles until July 31 2015! I am sure we will use those miles before then.

This is also a great way for you to add a few more miles to your account if you are trying to have enough miles to get a free ticket.

Don’t forget you can also get miles when you fly “partner airlines”. When I fly  Delta, I also get United miles. There are also a lot of international airlines that are partners, so you can accumulate more miles!

You can also exchange your miles for products, hotel stays, magazines, and more! If you have miles – don’t let them expire!

Does this work on other airlines? If so, please share so we don’t waste our miles!
