I received a complimentary start at General Butler park. All opinions are my own. #generalbutlerstatepark
I love to spend time outdoors hiking, fishing, relaxing, etc. But I do not like to sleep in a tent. I need a real bed, air conditioning and a nice hot shower. So if my husband wants me to go on a camping trip with our family, he needs to find a place with a cabin.
We just moved to La Grange, Kentucky. It’s a small and awesome town about 25 miles East of Louisville, Kentucky. It’s a quiet town with a unique downtown that had a train that runs through it. We have tried to find some fun spots, close to La Grange, to enjoy outside with our family.
Just about 25 miles East of our little town is an even smaller town called Carrolton. In Carrolton is General Butler State Park. It’s so easy to get to – just a few miles from I-71. And if you are like me, you will be happy to know there are restaurants and grocery stores just a few miles from the campsite.
About General Butler State Park:
Northern Kentucky’s first state park and one of the first 10 in the commonwealth is General Butler State Resort Park. On August 12, 1931, a 300-acre tract comprising part of the old William O. Butler family farm became Kentucky’s sixth state park. Not only is the park a historic site, it is also a place of great natural beauty. This is the only spot in Kentucky that has the unique view of the convergence of the Kentucky and Ohio Rivers.
There is a ton to do so let me take you on a quick tour of our time at General Butler Park!
When we arrived we were a bit early. They were still getting our room ready so we took a tour of some of the areas around the park. There is a beautiful lookout where you can see the Ohio River. You can start to see all the beautiful flowers and trees coming back for the Spring.
This was a short trail the the dogs and kids loved!
We arrived at our cozy 3 bedroom cottage. It had all the amenities of home except wi-fi. (If you need wi-fi you can head to the lodge). We had 3 nice bedrooms with very comfortable beds.
We were able to watch our favorite baseball team play the opening game thanks to a big TV and cable. The couches and chairs were also nice and comfortable.
We bought some food and had bacon and eggs for breakfast and sandwiches for lunch. For dinner we grilled some steak, hamburgers and hotdogs! The kitchen had everything you needed – even dishwasher detergent!
This was our view out the back yard of our cottage. We had a small porch and a fire pit. They had some metal chairs and tables but we also brought our camping chairs.
This deer was eating just off the side of one of the roads in the park. He let use get pretty close before he took off. (Don’t worry we were in our van.)
After dinner we had to make S’mores! We ran out of marshmallows on the second night so it was very nice to have a Walmart and Kroger just down the road.
The next morning we wanted to go fishing. We caught a few fishes but it was a little too cold to stay outside too long.
During the peak months they have a train that goes around a loop for the kids to enjoy.
After fishing and playing on the playground for hours it was time to hang up our hammock and take a nap. It was so peaceful and relaxing.
We went during an off peak time and there were a few things that we didn’t get to do like play min golf and swim in the pool. You can also play tennis or basketball. There is also a golf course.
You can even tour the home of General Butler! We didn’t get a chance to eat at the restaurant – but I have heard it’s delicious. It’s also a pet friendly park – so you can take your furry friends with you on vacation.
You can reserve cottages of all sizes, rooms at the lodge, pitch your tent or hook up a camper. They have all the facilities available to plan your perfect trip!
We can’t wait to go back and make more memories with our family!
