Something you may not have know about our family is that we lived in Mexico City for 12 years. Thanksgiving was always a holiday we celebrated when we lived there even though it wasn’t a Mexican holiday. My husband was a professor and every year his students would ask about our Thanksgiving celebration. It became a tradition to invite the students to our house so they could learn more about the food and the cultural aspect of the holiday for our family.
It was always a lot of work. I made all the food and sometimes we had over 25 people at our house. It was also different because we could not get the same ingredients that I was used to having access to when I made our family recipes. The potatoes were different, and the turkeys were a lot smaller.
We now live in Kentucky, still far away from our family but we have made so many amazing friends that we want to be able to spend the holiday with them. This year we will be celebrating Friendsgiving. I can shop at Walmart to find all the ingredients I need, and I can share the responsibility of the cooking with all my friends, so we don’t have to spend the whole day in the kitchen and we can really enjoy each other’s company.
This recipe is just as easy to make. The cheese dip is made with shredded cheddar. I usually have all these ingredients in my house.
Hillshire Farm® Lit’l Smokies® and Cheese Dip
- 1 28oz package Hillshire Farm® Lit’l Smokies® Smoked Sausages
- 4 Tablespoons butter
- 1/4 cup flour
- 2 cups milk
- 3 cups Sharp Cheddar Cheese
- 1 10 oz can diced tomatoes and chilies, drained
- In a medium sauce pan melt the butter and add the flour. Let the mixture come to a boil and boil for about 1 minute. Add the milk and let it return to a boil. Let it thicken up a little and then remove it from the heat.
- Whisk in the cheese. Once the cheese has completely melted, add the can of tomatoes and chilis.
- Warm up the Hillshire Farm® Lit’l Smokies® Smoked Sausages according to the package directions.
- Grab some pretty toothpicks and serve!
