Can you believe that summer is just about over? Today my kids start school! This school year is completely different for them because they will all be attending the same public school. For the past 3 years I have homeschooled my kids, so this will be very different for all of us. I am use to being with my kids all the time.
Some people may thing that a 5th grader is too young for a cell phone, but I like to know they are just a phone call away. I like that peace of mind.
Here are 3 reasons why my son has a cell phone:
1 - To stay connected with his parents. Since this is the first year all our kids are going to go to public school I like that he has a way to communicate with me if he needs to. After school he can check his messages to make sure I'm not running late to pick him up from school. Just knowing we are a phone call away from each other will make us feel better.
Two of my kids are playing baseball, so this will also be helpful when they both have practice at the same time. He can keep it in his bag and text us when he is done. I always hated when I had to wait for my parents to pick me up after my softball practice was over - now that he has his own phone he can easily let me know when he is done with practice.
2 - He can stay connected with his friends. Kids communicate often via text. I don't like to talk on the phone because sometimes it is just easier to send a quick text to confirm information or ask a question. I like that he has the option to communicate with his friends after school.
3- Educational Apps - Did you know you can find an app for just about anything? My son is very smart, but just like most kids his age, he doesn't like to do more work than necessary. It's easier to persuade him to spend 15 minutes playing an app that helps him memorize his division problems than it is to make him do a whole page of math problems. I think if it's fun you learn more!
The Walmart Family Mobile Plan makes it very affordable for our family to have an extra phone line for our son. I purchased a Samsung Grand Prime and WFM Starter Kit at Walmart.
After doing some research the Walmart Family Mobile Plan is the Lowest Priced Unlimited Plan that include unlimited talk, text and data/web. The cost is just $29.88/month (for the first line) and includes unlimited talk, text & data service plan which includes up to 1G of 4G LTE data.
Plus I also love that it is a post paid plan. That means I get sent a bill every month to pay. I don't have to worry about "adding time" to his phone so he can use his phone. I don't really like pre-paid plans because I alway seem to run out of time on the phone when I actually need it.
When you are at Walmart picking up school supplies, take a look at the cell phones available in the electronic section to see if you can find a phone that fits your needs. We really love the size and all the features of the Samsung Grand Prime. But they have several options to fit every budget.
Is there a new cell phone plan on your Back to School shopping list? Who will you need to connect with when heading back-to-school and how can Walmart Family Mobile help you? Leave a comment and let me know!

That sounds like a great plan. my son will be needing a phone soon, too.
This sounds like a great plan. I need to look into a new one for my son.
We have an emergency cell phone that my girls share. They only have it when they are away from home or when we are away. I am sure they will LOVE us (insert sarcasm) for this when they are teens.
What a great sounding phone, its good they do kid friendly plans 🙂 x
I could see your points of safety for a child to have a cell phone and believe these are often overlooked in the process of making the household budget.
However, my dad uses the Walmart phone plan and agree with you that it does a decent job of solving this budget challenge.
This sounds like a great plan. My son has a phone now. Mainly because he has band practice and needs to let us know when he is at practice safely since he rides the activity bus provided by the school. My daughter has one so that she can stay connected with friends.
It's definitely nice to have a reasonable plan for your kids. Cell phones are pretty important nowadays.
These are great reasons. I am the kind of mom who worries a lot. At least with a cell phone, I know my child's whereabouts.
Both of my sons have cell phones now and they have really become a necessity. I need to be able to contact them after school when I pick them up.
I had a lot of thoughts on whether kids should have a cellphone or not. I keep on thinking back to my time as a kid. I did not have a cellphone but I survived! However, times have changed and I believe a kid should carry a cellphone with them. You'll never know when an emergency would arise, where staying connected would be the ultimate need.
My son got his first phone when in grade 6. I think there's a lot of factors when it comes to if ya child is ready for something like a phone. In emergencies they are great to have.
My 11 year old will be getting her first phone soon. She is in track, and the schedules can be unpredictable. I'd like for her to have a quick way of reaching us if she is let out early.
I got my son an older type of phone for emergencies. We can't afford the hightech choices but he can text and I can call, plus track his phone . It's been helpful so far!
Walmart has great mobile plans available. It is important for kids to have a phone for emergency's. I have noticed it is getting hard to find a pay phone lately.
I think it is important for kids to have a phone these days. I like that i can get a hold of my kids whenever i need to.
my daughter has a cell phone s we can get a hld of her at shool. Its imprtant these days to have one.
That's why I finally begged my parents to get me a cell phone once I started high school. I had badminton & tutoring peers after school & needed a phone to make calls for pick up.
