Can you believe I never did laundry until I got married!? My mom was pretty awesome. We actually didn’t do any chores growing up. We came home from school every day and the house was spotless. I don’t think I ever even made my bed. She told us it was because we would have plenty of time to do housework when we were adults and she wanted us to enjoy our childhood.

Now, I have been doing laundry for over 20 years and I have learned so much. My laundry routine has changed a lot, so I thought I would share some tips and teach you the “new school” way to do laundry. I promise these tips will save you time and money!

I used to be someone that thought that all detergents were equal – but they are not!. Leaning the “New School” way to do laundry is saving me time and money, helps protect my clothes to last longer, and makes them smell amazing!

If you need some tips to make laundry a little bit less of a “chore” I have learned a few things that will help make laundry day your favorite day of the week!

Sorting laundry is a pain. When it finally arrives in my laundry basket I spend a lot of time sorting the whites, darks, and towels. Let me let you in on a little secret – you don’t actually have to wash your towels in a separate load. You can wash them with any other cotton clothes. You do want to wash your gym clothes separately – if you wash them with other clothes it could cause breakdowns in the fabric and destroy antimicrobial and moisture-wicking qualities.

Don’t do all the sorting yourself. You can purchase one of those laundry sorting baskets so that your kids can sort them when they undress. It will save you some time every week when you do laundry.

I hate socks! Maybe because I am a Florida girl, I don’t like to wear socks. All three of my kids and my husband wear socks every day of the week. Do the math. That’s 28 pairs of socks, or 56 socks to wash and match every week. To fix that problem, I bought each of them a delicates bag and hung them on the washing machine. When they come in the house and take off their socks, they go right to the laundry room and put their socks in their bags. When it’s laundry day, I wash the whole bag, and each kid can match their own socks. Another perk – there are hardly any mismatched socks!

Most laundry rooms have shelves where you can hang clothes. Use them not only to hang things that can’t go in the dryer, but also to reduce wrinkles. Just pull your clothes out as soon as the drying cycle finishes and hang them up. I do this all the time with my husband’s work shirts – I don’t even own an iron.

Sometimes I do forget to get them out of the dryer quickly so I throw the clothes back in dryer with a Downy Dryer Sheet and a wet sock for a few minutes to remove the wrinkles and static while giving my clothes a great scent.

Speaking of dry clothes, if you like to get them folded right away, get a canvas bin for each child. As you fold them, add them to the bin so each kid can put away their clothes.

Have you ever accidentally put something in the dryer and it shrunk? You can avoid this if you keep a dry erase marker in your laundry room. Jot down the items that need extra care after being washed and you shouldn’t have the problem anymore. If your clothes shrink in the dryer, soak them in water with a few tablespoons of hair conditioner for a few minutes and gently stretch the fibers back out.

My “New School Laundry” Regimen

You always need the right tools when you are doing laundry and this new school regimen of Tide and Downy products really does the trick! I love Tide PODS detergent pacs. These save me a lot of time and money. I just drop a pac into the washing machine and then add my clothes. They come out clean and smell great! Tide PODS are highly concentrated 3-in-1 pacs that contain detergent, stain remover and brightener in one convenient step. I have three kids, so I need all the stain fighting power I can get.

They save me money too!

They clean as well as six doses of the leading bargain brand liquid detergent. You don’t have to measure the powder or liquid. In the past I was probably using too much detergent and wasting money. Plus you can use Tide PODS in any temperature water. I prefer to wash my clothes in cold water and Tide gets them clean every time! You can use them in standard and high-efficiency machines.

I have a preteen boy. If you have been around boys you know that they can stink. I have a secret weapon in my laundry room to help his clothes smell better.  The NEW Downy Protect & Refresh Liquid Fabric Conditioner locks out bad odors, giving clothes in-wear protection from offensive odors all day long.

I want to be able to pass my kids’ clothes down to my other kids, so I love that Downy Protect & Refresh Liquid Fabric Conditioner smooths and strengthens fibers to protect my clothes from stretching, fading and fuzzing versus using detergent alone. It’s a very simple addition to my laundry routine. Simply add Downy to your fabric softener reservoir (drawer or center of agitator) and let it work it’s magic!

Downy Fresh Protect Scent Boosting Beads complement detergent by neutralizing odors and providing a boost of scent to laundry. The beads are motion activated and provide 24-hour odor neutralization and freshness – they’re like deodorant for your clothes!

You can’t finish a load of laundry without Downy dryer sheets. They control static, prevent wrinkles, soften your clothes and provide long-lasting freshness. I have been using them for as long as I can remember and I can tell the difference when we forget to add one to the dryer.

I love that idea of getting a delicates bag for socks. I am with you when it comes to matching pairs of socks! It is so time consuming. I am trying this. Hope my kids would place their socks in there and not in the basket again.

I love the idea of the dry erase marker! I should have thought of that earlier. Tide is always my go to choice for laundry detergent. Our clothes smell so fresh!

I actually give a laundry care package to recent high school grads. Something useful and easy.

We love Tide and Downy. They are both brands I remember as a kid and that I've come to rely on as a mom.
