Leader in Me at Home: Living Out Your Family Mission Statement

This post was written as part of a contest with The Leader in Me Company. All opinions are my own.

It’s been a few weeks since we created our family mission statement. It was a great experience and got our family thinking about what we want to become. We posted it on our bulletin board, but we don’t want our mission statement to just be words on a bulletin board. We want to live by it!

Here are three steps we’re taking to live by our family mission statement:
    1. Memorize it – the first few days after we created it, I started to quiz our kids about it. Our seven year old daughter memorized it no problem. Keeping it in their head and repeating it over and over will help them live it out in their daily lives.

    1. Remember it – Over the past few weeks, I’ve found myself questioning my kids about their actions based on the mission statement. Since ours is, “To care for and love our family and others while we glorify God, have fun, and make the world a better place,” it has been easy to ask questions like, “Is what you are doing right now showing that you care for your sister?” Keeping it in front of us and evaluating our actions based on our mission helps us live out our family mission statement.

    1. Plan activities with it in mind – We have also started thinking about activities we can do to live out our mission statement. How can we make the world a better place? What kinds of family activities can we do to care for others or even show our own family we care for them? As we plan our family activities, we are using our mission statement to guide what we do.

Creating and living by our mission statement has been a huge step forward for our family, and we are looking forward to continuing to grow together and show others we care while we glorify God, have fun, and make the world a better place.

Does your family have a mission statement? What do you to live it out?
