How To Be More Productive At Work

Your lifestyle has a huge impact on your work life. Many of us spend at least 8 hours a day sitting at a desk. Plus we could have an additional hour in the car for our commute. Eating healthy foods and having an active lifestyle can help you be more productive and alert at work. Studies show, for instance, that good eating habits can increase attention spans, improve memory and boost well-being.

Research shows that whether organizations provide onsite exercise facilities, subsidize gym memberships, offer access to health coaching or simply encourage employees to get up and walk, wellness programs can reduce sick days by 45 percent.

But how can we find time to work, sleep, eat healthy, be a good parent and spouse, etc? There are only 24  hours in a day but I believe once you create a routine, it can really help give you more energy and help you be more productive.

How to be more active:

When I worked in an office we had a 45-minute lunch and 2 – 15-minute breaks. I would use my lunch hour to eat a healthy meal and do something that was not related to work. You can read a book or talk to a co-worker, but try to use that time to refresh and relax.

During my 15 minute breaks, I would take a walk. If it was nice outside I would take a few laps around the parking lot. Or I would just do a few laps in the halls of my building. It was a great way to get out of my chair and make my body move around.

How to eat well:

I always had a large cup of water at my desk and I would sip on it all day. I could easily get my 64 ounces of water in before lunch. Water helps you feel more energized.

The 3 o’clock lull that many people feel at work can be due to dehydration, so drink lots of water,” Jackson tells WebMD. “Set goals: Bring a 16 ounce bottle of water to work and try to finish it by lunch, and then fill it up again and finish that by 3 p.m. By 5 p.m., finish a third bottle.

If you drink coffee at work, limit the amount of sugar you use. Switch to a natural sweetener like Stevia and use half and half instead of milk.

It is so easy to snack on junk food while sitting at your desk. So make sure you don’t have any available. Pack some fruits and vegetables that are easy to eat while you are working. Spend about 20 minutes on a Sunday afternoon prepackaging snacks for the week.

It may take a few weeks to get into a routine, but I know that when I eat healthy, get up and move around, and sleep well, I have more energy and I have an overall better quality of life. You will be more productive at work and less sluggish.

As a freelance blogger working from home, that applies to me, too. Eating well and healthy and doing a bit of stretching and exercise between working hours really helps, even to boost the immune system. :) Junk food can be nice once in a while, but making it a habit is a no-no in my book.

Nice post and happy to meet a fellow Activate blogger!
