Many times people are a little shocked that I have a blog. I get to work with really awesome brands to create recipes. I get to try out new products and share my experiences. And I get to visit places and share about our trips. All of this is a lot of fun – and it’s also a lot of work.
Yes, I do get to work from home. But it can be a little more difficult to work from home when you also home school. But it is totally worth my time. If starting a blog is something you have been thinking about doing – here’s my advice.
Pick a topic that you enjoy. When I first started this blog, I shared a lot of deals. I would always get asked by my friends and family about getting the best prices on things, so I thought this would be a great place to do it. Then it sorta evolved to a way to save time and money. This lead me to create and share more recipes. So narrow down the topics you like to talk about – is it food, travel, pets, sewing, raising kids, etc. You have to be knowledgeable about the topic you pick.
After you pick your topic – you need a good website name. Pick something that is easy to remember and easy to spell. Get a .com if possible. Since I started this blog over 6 years ago, I have used Blue Host. When I have had a question or an issue, I can almost instantly reach them via chat or Twitter. You can sign up for just $3.95 per month.
There are free hosting options available but it is much better to go with a hosting company. Blue Host is very helpful!
Write, Write, and Write More!! Decide how often you want to publish your articles. You want to be consistent. Create an editorial calendar to help you know what topics you want to share about. Use national holidays, the back to school season, summer themes, etc when you are brainstorming your ideas. The more organized you are the better!
Blogging is a lot of fun but it can also be a lot of work. Please let me know if you have any questions!
