Walmart Plus Review - Is it Worth It?

Last Updated on October 24, 2022 by Janell

Here is my honest review of Walmart Plus. Is it worth it?  If you are thinking about buying it, read this first!

Walmart Plus rolled out this money. It's meant to rival Amazon Prime - but I was disappointed with this comparison. Walmart + is more like ShipIt or a store delivery service other retailers offer.

If you are looking for a great grocery delivery service - see if Kroger Delivery is available in your area. Check out this blog post to learn more.

How Much is Walmart Plus?

Walmart Plus is $98 per year or $12.99 per month. That's a whopping $155.88 per month if you do it monthly. So if this service feels right to you - pay for the year to save $57.88.

In comparison, Amazon Prime is $119 per year or $12.99 per month.

Tip - I had an email giving me a free 15-day trial. Once I joined, they asked me to answer a few questions and they extended my free trial to 30 days.

What are the benefits of Walmart Plus?

Walmart Plus Home delivery:

With a Walmart + subscription, you can order anything from Walmart, including bathroom accessories, toys, household essentials, and groceries, for free same-day delivery or next day delivery depending on the time slots available.

I needed things like kitchen towels, bathroom trash cans, and a pooper scooper that was all delivered to my door.

TIP - Before signing up, make sure delivery is available in your area.

Disadvantages of Walmart Plus

One of the things I didn't like is the $35 minimum. This was something that you don't have to worry about with Amazon Prime. If I need a $5 product, I just purchase it and it's at my house in a day or two.

A few hours before delivery you will get an email that lets you know if there were any substitutions. One of the things I really needed was a 32-gallon garbage can. I got an email that this was out of stock and they didn't substitute it with anything.

So, unfortunately, I had to run out to Lowes (because it is closer) and go purchase a trash can. When I check my local Walmart's website it still shows that this garbage can is in-stock so it almost makes me feel like the delivery person didn't want to have to lug it around.

Walmart Plus delivery times are first-come, first-serve. When your order is close to the delivery time you can track your driver’s location in the app once your order has left the store, and the delivery is contact-free with no signature required.

Walmart Plus In-store benefits:

You can avoid the checkout line! Use the Walmart app and take advantage of the Scan & Go feature. This lets you scan items in-store as you shop. To pay, load a debit card or credit card into your app ahead of time, and then scan the QR code at a self-checkout kiosk. You will get a receipt for your purchase.

You can also bag your purchases at the kiosk. But another reason this isn't a great service is that, Walmart doesn’t accept coupons through Scan & Go, so you have to skip the service if you’re looking to save money when you checkout.

Walmart Plus At the gas pump:

If you live near Murphy USA, and Murphy Express gas stations you will save .05 cents per gallon at the pump. Even though there are almost 2,000 locations across the US, I do not have this gas station close to me.

In reality, I would save, at most, $1 every time I fill up my gas tank and I usually only have to fill it up 2-3 times per month. If the gas station isn't close to you, you may not save any money in the end with this perk.

And it's a little bit of a pain to take advantage of this discount. You need to select member prices for fuel in the Walmart app and follow the on-screen instructions. You will be required to pay at the pump,  instead of inside, meaning payments likely need to be cash-free.

One benefit is that there are no limits on how many discounted gallons you can get. So if you and your spouse fill up on the same day you will both still get the savings. (But I haven't tried this so I am not sure how it will work if you can both be signed in on the app.)

One other huge thing that separates this from competing with Amazon Prime is the need to tip your delivery driver. If you won't use this for groceries to save you time - Amazon Prime is so much better. There isn't' a $35 minimum and you don't have to tip the Amazon delivery driver.

For Example: My order was only $50 and they suggested I tip my driver $7. So on top of the $13 monthly fee + the $7 tip, I have already spent $20 on this service and this was only 1 order for the month.

I actually don't mind grocery shopping. I don't trust the shoppers to search the products on the shelf and check expiration dates to make sure I have the freshest products.

I don't like it when they can't substitute a product and it could mess up my whole meal plan for the week. So then I still have to go into the store.

ShipIt from Target

  • Target Shipt is the only service that you can use without a membership, though non-member deliveries are charged a $10 delivery fee.
  • Tipping your delivery driver
  • You can text with your shopper to make sure you get the right substitutions and add last minute items.
  • No other perks like gas discount or movie or music streaming

The Verdict About My Walmart Plus Review:

After my month trial, I will cancel the Walmart Plus service. The cost is too high to worry about the $35 minimum, tipping the driver, and lack of substitution items. The gas savings won't give me any savings.

I can do my shopping at Publix (it's less than 2 minutes away vs my Walmart is 15 minutes away) and shop the sales to keep my grocery budget low. I will still shop at Walmart because they do have great prices and selection - but I don't' need the service for someone else to do it for me.

Any non-food items I should be able to get from Amazon or Sam's Club and get the next day or 2-day shipping.

I really wanted Walmart Plus to be awesome - but for now, Amazon still has the best benefits for a paid delivery service.

But if you hate grocery shopping and love how easy it is to shop for your grocery online - this could be a great service for you.

This is also a good option if you get a free trial that will cover you for the holiday season.

  1. I cancelled (and cancelled the $300 order I had ready!) as soon as I saw they wanted me to tip the driver. Screw that. I can just drive to the store and pickup myself for free.

  2. We tried using Walmart plus. We submitted our grocery order early in the morning. Later that same day my wife received an e-mail that the order was canceled to include the following statement “we are sorry, due to our staffing and inability to stock your order, your order was canceled. Please use Walmart.com to reorder. We then found all our funds we used in placing the order was also frozen. When we addressed the issue online through their customer service, they informed us to speak to billing, and then instantly broke communication. This was our second repeat cancelation issue in two weeks. As a result, will be doing a greater bulk of our grocery shopping through Amazon, with which we have no issues with receiving our order in a timely matter.

  3. Im so sorry you had a bad experience! I wanted this to be awesome but it is not something I will pay for without many changes.

  4. I'm canceling anything Amazon just as soon as I have good alternatives. Doesn't sound like Wal-Mart is there yet.

  5. I had Walmart Delivery and they changed my membership to Walnart+. Whether I choose pick up or delivery they are ALWAYS out of some core grocery item I need. If they cannot fill my whole order I'd rather cancel the whole thing, but they don't let you. Also attempting to reorder just the missing item is futile due to order minimums and inconsistencies between what they say is store pick up only vs what they will deliver. I'm done. Ever since Instacart started offerring Walmart as an option I've been using that. Fix your inventory issues, Walmart!

  6. Why do you keep this review up and encourage people to buy Walmart+ when you CLEARLY have not used the service and you have stock photos instead of real photos and all you're getting is bad follow-up comments? SHAME ON YOU. Take this article down.

  7. Hi Ken...Im not sure why you think you need to criticize my review about this. But let me correct you about your assumptions...This post does not encourage people to get Walmart+. It's just my experience with Walmart+. It wasn't worth it to me. I used the service during my 30 day free trial and this post is based on my experience. As far as using stock photos...what other images would you expect me to use? I didnt take a picture of the delivery driver and the products I purchased came in regular Walmart bags. So shame on you for looking for ways to be mean to people online.

  8. I agree with your review 100% i am a Walmart+ member as my first 2 experiences were great and then boom everything you said started to happen like 60% of my orders were getting canceled on groceries I do know they have like the Walmart employee just got tired of picking out your items on your order so it isn't worth tipping the driver's everytime who literally do no work besides drive. They have never once brought it to my door wich is disappointing im a generous tipper. What is also disappointing you pick a time slot and if it takes you a bit to pick your groceries they inform you that the time is no longer available then usually direct you to 3-4 days out for an available time.Unfortunately for someone like me a single mother who doesn't currently have a working vehicle it is more convenient to just walk to my nearest grocery store. After my full experience with walmart+ i wish i had never spent my $98 on it as i do not feel like I've recieved $98 in services. Im usually a happy customer but Walmart+ has no bang for the buck. With all this said i am a Amazon Prime member and i definitely feel like it is worth the money i dont use all my membership benefits i really should take the time to but again im a single mother. My kids love prime and i love Amazon if you are not a member you should totally jump on the band wagon!

  9. Im sorry your experience hasn't been great. See if Kroger delivery is available in your area. Im in Florida and we do not have any Kroger stores but they do delivery only to my area. They have a warehouse in central Florida. Everything arrives in a refrigerated truck and they will not take my tip. Delivery is $10 per order but they have a ton of coupons!! My first 3 orders had a $10 off coupon to cover the delivery fee.

  10. Don't cancel Amazon. I'm trying Walmart plus for the groceries but most of the foods I want they don't deliver i.e milk, meat (I eat plant based), flour, tortillas etc. They say that I have to pick up. If I have to pickup anything why wouldn't I just pickup everything. I could call Instracart, although their cost would be about the same as a month cost of Walmart plus but at least they'll bring all the items.

  11. Im in Florida and Kroger just moved into my state. They have no physical stores - only delivery and it's awesome! It's $10 per delivery but they have coupons to cover your first few orders. After that, you can pay $79 a year for unlimited orders. They have awesome sales - and so many digital coupons, unlike Walmart. My first few orders had 8-10 freebies from digital coupons. Everything is delivered in a refrigerated truck. So check it out and see if they deliver in your area - it's so much better than Walmart+ and Instacrat. (They will not take your tip either!)

  12. SAVE YOUR MONEY! Before I paid for the Walmart+ and paid for each delivery, they were always on time. As soon as they got my money for so-called free delivery (they want a 15%+ tip for their driver-from you), every order but one has been at least an hour late. I have had to cancel 2 orders completely because I had to leave the house before they could possibly deliver it or I had to wait until the next day with no time frame whatsoever. They will not answer the phone so you do not have any idea when to expect an order, just an email "your order is delayed" and delayed and delayed.............!

  13. Thank you for your review, I think I'll wait too, wasn't aware of the tipping, that's like paying more for items.

  14. I like it for the free delivery like Amazon - but it's not worth it for instant delivery. And there was a time when I ordered it to be shipped and it was delivered from a local store. We live in a gated community and because the driver couldn't get in they canceled my order.

  15. when i signed uo it never specified if it was monthly or yearly and to my surprise it was yearly and taken out of my personal checkìng account which was linked. No permission or notification.canceled the next day

  16. I’ve found it really annoying and confusing that Walmart will do separate holds on my account for any items I’ve had to add to my order after scheduling the pickup time. It makes it incredibly difficult to keep my checkbook balanced. And there have been several times in the month that I’ve been using plus that I was given a completely hollow head of garlic, rotten cilantro, etc. Those things aren’t expensive, but now I have to go to the store anyway to replace them. But I have chronic health issues that make shopping in-person at Walmart difficult — particularly since they now focus most of their energy on fulfilling pick-up/delivery orders and now don’t even bother staffing people to work the checkout. I kinda hate the direction the world is moving in with regards to online shopping and delivery.

  17. I agree - Walmart has its issues. You should see if Kroger delivery is in your area. You get the first 3 deliveries for free and after that, it's $10 or they have a yearly subscription for like $79 for unlimited deliveries. But they have so many awesome digital coupons! I save so much money. We just got delivery in Florida even though we don't have any Kroger stores - it's only delivery. And they don't want you to tip. https://www.savingyoudinero.com/2021/08/31/kroger-delivery-is-now-in-florida/
