Crushed Tomato Sauce Recipe – Easy Homemade Marinara Sauce

Sharing is caring!

Looking for a Crushed Tomato Sauce Recipe? This is it! It has lots of garlic and onion flavor to make a quick and easy dinner. I always have a few cans of crushed tomatoes in my pantry so I can make a delicious home marinara sauce. this pasta sauce comes together quickly and is delicious!

Last week we really wanted to have Chicken Parm for dinner. I had everything ready and I went to get the sauce and it wasn’t there. I had already used it and forgot to buy a new jar of sauce. My family would have been disappointed and I didn’t really have any other ideas so I was happy when I found cans of crushed tomatoes in my pantry.

Growing up my mom would always make a big pot of homemade tomato sauce. I think my dad could have eaten spaghetti every night for dinner and been happy. My mom had shared her recipe and I knew how to make homemade sauce. But when you have 3 little kids – you tend to grab the jar of sauce when it’s on sale at the grocery store.

I grabbed my recipe and threw the ingredients together and it was so good. I may never buy sauce again. Well that’s probably a lie – but I want to make more time for more homemade foods!

This homemade marinara sauce recipe is great for so many things. We used it with the Calzones the next day. But this red sauce would also be great with some ground beef mixed in or even meatballs. Your whole family will love this homemade spaghetti sauce recipe with any pasta dish with a sprinkle of parmesan cheese. And you will love this easy recipe to get dinner on the table!

Some tips about this perfect sauce recipe:

  • If you don’t have crushed tomatoes, you can use whole tomatoes. Whole tomatoes are generally sold peeled, in either juice or puree. … If your recipe calls for crushed, simply break the tomatoes up with your hands or immersion blender as they go into the pot.  Slowly add the juice in from the can so it’s not too watery.
  • This recipe calls for a 28oz can of tomatoes but can easily be double if you want to make extra for a large meal or to freeze. Make sure you used a large pot.
  • Get a can of San Marzano tomatoes and try it out! I think it’s the best canned tomatoes but my mom also says she makes the best tomato sauce with Walmart canned tomatoes.
  • As much as I love fresh tomatoes, this isn’t a good recipe to use them.

The tomato sauce will have a thicker consistency the longer it cooks. You can add some water to thin it out if you don’t like a thick sauce. Don’t use tomato paste in this recipe – it will give it a bitter taste.

I like the simplicity of this recipe. It’s not overly seasoned with Italian seasoning, basil leaves, and it uses fresh onion and garlic instead of garlic or onion powder. I feel like most Italian restaurants don’t overly season their simple marinara sauce and they let the flavors of the garlic and onions come through.

Cook’s Tip – As the sauce cooks, start to boil your water in a deep pot to cook your pasta so you can have dinner on the table in about a half hour!

This is our favorite tomato sauce recipe. I love to be able to make my own tomato sauce with basic pantry ingredients. I think that as my kids get older, I am going to have to double this recipe because they can eat an entire pot of sauce!

I hope you enjoy this as a simple spaghetti sauce or the base for a fancier meal and it becomes an easy go to recipe for family dinners.

Chicken parmigiana is one thing I fix that my husband just LOVES. I will have to try it with this marinara sauce next time I fix it. Now I'm getting hungry! I might fix it tonight :)
