Fun Facts – What It’s Like On The Set Of Black-ish

Kitchen

Visiting a TV set is a pretty amazing experience. It is really cool how they have things set up so they can get the right shot. They have to have the lighting in the right spot and leave space for the cameras.

Last month when I visited Los Angeles, I was able to visit the set of Black-ish. We had so much fun and we met and interviewed Tracee Ellis Ross while she gave us a tour of the house.

Here are some things you may not know about TV sets:

All the walls in the Johnson home are removable.  To get a shot from any angle, the walls in every room can be lifted up. Plus there isn’t a ceiling – that’s where the lights are.

How do they get those outdoor scenes? The “outdoors” is really a huge curtain that gets moved around depending on what room they will be shooting in.  There are fake trees, lights and a fan to create the illusion of the “backyard”.  They do a pretty awesome job making it look real.

The pictures on the walls are really pictures of the kids when they were younger. They do an amazing job making it really feel like this is their home.

The stairs in the house don’t really lead to anything – just a dead end.

Now I know you want to watch tonight’s episode! You may be able to see some of the things I listed above.  I promise this show will have you laughing out loud!

Tonight episode is “Stuff” – Dre thinks Christmas has become commercialized and is all about “stuff,” and no one loves “stuff” more than his kids. Pops and Ruby think they have forgotten the true meaning of Christmas and come up with a new plan to pare down gifts and spend more time together. The kids don’t handle the news well and hope that if they put on their best behavior Dre and Bow will cave in. Meanwhile, Daphne Lido (played by Wanda Sykes), who is single for her first holiday alone, invites herself to the Johnson family home to celebrate with them. “Stuff” was written by Corey Nickerson and directed by Ken Whittingham.
